End-to-End Experience Best Practices

This article walks through best practices for creating a seamless, end-to-end Try Before You Buy experience.

PDP Best Practices

👍

Note: Use the customization settings in the TryNow button app block to make adjustments described below.

PDP Example

Best Practices

  • Ensure the TryNow button is right next to the Add to Cart button and that the styling is consistent with other elements on the page (same font, font size, etc.).
  • If your ATC button contains the price, ensure that the TBYB button also contains price of $0 so that it is symmetrical.
  • For the copy underneath the button, below are some best practices but adjust based on your audience and typical shopper base.
    • Default copy: Try up to X items at home for Y days.
      • The reason we suggest including the cart limit is to encourage shoppers to fill their carts. Analysis shows that including the cart limit increases Gross UPT.
    • Adjustments to consider:
      • Add in a link to your TryLinked collection page with hyperlinked copy "View TryNow collection" or "See all the items you can try." This is especially important if TryNow is not on all products, as it makes it harder for shoppers to find eligible items.
      • Consider "Only pay for what you keep" and consider mentioning easy / free returns.
      • If you feel more clarification is needed due to the nature of your product, adjust the copy to add more clarity, e.g. if shoppers may not understand what would be allowed during a trial.

Cross-Site Best Practices

If a shopper’s first time seeing the Try Before You Buy option is on the product page, it can feel unexpected or out of place. To make the experience feel more seamless and trusted, it’s best to introduce the program earlier and more consistently across your site. Adding banners, collection callouts, or homepage mentions helps position TryNow as an integrated part of your brand—not just a purchase option.

Consider the following:

  • [Strongly recommend] Add your Try Before You Buy collection page to your navigation bar or navigation menu. Make sure to use a TryLink in order to optimize and track conversion.
  • Add a site-wide banner highlighting Try Before You Buy.
  • Add a homepage block featuring Try Before You Buy.
  • Showcase Try Before You Buy in a homepage popup, welcome modal, or exit intent popup.

Collection Page Best Practices

Collection Page Example

Best Practices

  • Add a simple explainer at the top of the collection page to help shoppers understand how Try Before You Buy works.
    • You can leverage the How It Works app block to create and customize this section.
    • Be sure to include key info:
      • How many items shoppers can try
      • Trial length
      • Return process (e.g. easy / free returns or note any fees)
  • If your collection page uses quick-add buttons, make sure they are TryNow buttons, not standard ATC buttons, especially since the shopper is browsing and sought out a TBYB-specific experience
  • Make sure the collection is pulling in all eligible TryNow products
    • Use Shopify's automated collection rules based on the tag TryNowAutomated. This is what the TryNow system auto-adds to all eligible products based on your Button Visibility Rules.

Cart Best Practices

ℹ️

Note: Share Cart Features documentation with your developer in order to make the below enhancements.

Minicart Example

Best Practices

  • Ensure that the selling plan displays on the TryNow items.
  • It is important that the $0 cart is consistently communicated end-to-end to reduce confusion and minimize dropoff:
    • TryNow items should not display a standard price. Instead, show ”$0” or “Free Trial” to reflect the trial status.
    • You can optionally include the full price as secondary text (e.g., “$0 now, $128 if kept”) so shoppers understand the potential charge.
    • The cart subtotal should reflect only the “Amount Due Today”—this should include only the Buy Now portion of the order.
  • If you have a free shipping progress bar or free shipping threshold message, ensure that it is considering the value of the TryNow items.
    • Note: If you use a third-party shipping app, you will need to reach out to your POC to make this adjustment.

Checkout Best Practices

Checkout Example

Best Practices

  • Make sure that you have incorporated the proper checkout text edits.
  • Ensure that any free shipping discounts are being properly applied even to fully TryNow carts.

Paid Ads Best Practices

  • Clearly highlight the TBYB offer in your ad creative, using phrases like "Try Before You Buy", "Try at Home", or "Only pay for what you keep"
  • Avoid too much emphasis on "Free" or "$0." These terms can attract lower-intent shoppers who are more interested in getting something for free than actually trying with purchase intent. Instead, highlight the risk-free nature of the trial and the convenience of easy returns.
  • Ensure ad tracking accounts for failed authorizations. Orders with failed payment authorizations will be automatically canceled by TryNow and should not be counted as conversions. Use a tracking tool like Elevar, Make.com, or similar to filter out canceled TryNow orders when evaluating paid campaign performance.
  • Pair TryNow messaging with your strongest product hooks. For example, "Our best-selling jeans—now available to try at home before you buy."
  • Send traffic to a TryNow-specific landing page or collection. Use a TryLink to optimize for performance and track conversion.
