How do discounts work with TryNow?
TryNow is fully compatible with your existing promotions and discount logic. Shoppers can apply discount codes and receive sale pricing, just like they would with a regular Buy Now order — with one key difference: they won’t be charged until the trial ends.
Note:
If you have a custom setup of discount logic (such as through a discounting app or your own custom code), you may need adjustments to apply discounts properly to Try Before You Buy items.
FAQs
Q: If we are running a sale, do TryNow shoppers also get the discounted price (if they keep the item) or regular pricing?
By default, discounts will be applied to TryNow items. If a product is on sale or a discount code is applied, the shopper will only be charged the discounted price — but only after the trial ends and they decide to keep the item.
At checkout, the shopper will see:
- Full price minus any discounts, i.e. the price that would be paid if item is kept
- $0 due today
Q: Is there a way to disable discount codes from being used on TryNow orders?
While there is a way to do this, please note that there will be an impact to TryNow conversion rate. If a shopper checks out with a TryNow cart and encounters an error message that discount codes cannot be applied with TBYB, this will increase your checkout abandonment rate.
However, we provide this as a lever to your team to increase your discount rate savings.
Steps to implement:
- Open your Live Theme in the Shopify Theme Customizer and in the header bar, navigate to Checkout.
- On the app block panel, in the Discounts section, add the app block "TryNow Discount Control."
- Make sure to perform proper testing:
- Check that an error message will appear if you try to apply a discount code on a fully TryNow order.
- Check that there is no impact to applying a discount code to a buy now order.
Q: What if I want to add a discount during the shopper's trial?
Unfortunately, TryNow is unable to change the authorized amount, as this is not functionality that Shopify Payments provides. We recommend issuing the discount in the form of a refund after the shopper is charged post-trial.
